Sarjeant Art Gallery extension (Warren & Mahoney Design)

Year 1 $2.25m*
Year 2 $2.25m
*
Extending the Sarjeant Art Gallery will allow us to host national and international exhibitions, provide more space and a better environment for the Gallery's collection, and improve working conditions for staff.

The Warren & Mahoney design will extend the rear of the Gallery with the front of the building remaining unchanged. Amenities will be upgraded, and there will be better access for people with disabilities.

The design will provide a dramatic vista of the Whanganui River and Mt Ruapehu but there will be some impact on Queens Park, with the relocation or removal of some trees and a redesign of the roading layout. However, more car parks will be provided.

*The additional operating expenditure of this project will need to be borne by the Gallery and not the Council. Council's contribution is the capital funding and some projects may need to 'cut their cloth' as a consequence.

Jodie Dalgleish, Gallery Dalgleish:

"If the Sarjeant Gallery does not extend, we can not protect its collection and it is likely its doors will close in our lifetime. The history of our people and our river would go to another centre unworthy of it. Vote for a solution to this problem. Future generations demand it. Don't be put off by this bigger project, modest in relative national terms. Myself and others are committed to reactivating plans to raise funds to minimise the impact on ratepayers' pockets."

Marie McKay - Arts Developer, Whanganui Arts, Culture and Heritage Trust:

"The jewel in our city's crown, the Sarjeant Gallery, needs extending to meet 21st century functionality standards. This Warren and Mahoney design enhances visitor and educational access, offers suitable storage for our nationally important collection, and adequate workspaces for staff. This project will further stimulate growth in the arts, culture and heritage sector, and bring economic benefits to our district. In addition, it is eligible for central government funding."
