Kowhai Park redevelopment (planning)

$100,000

When built in the 1960s, Kowhai Park's play equipment was considered ahead of its time.

In 2005, the play equipment needs updating to meet children's increased expectations and new safety standards. During the next year, a comprehensive plan will be drawn up to restore Kowhai Park. The plan will include improving roads and car parking, upgrading the toilet facilities, installing all-weather pathways, and updating play equipment.

More use will be made of the river frontage, and additional tree plantings will provide more areas of shade. Kowhai Park will become a modern, safe and happy place for children to play and families to spend their leisure time.
Upgrading Kowhai Park is a big project. Planning will take one year at a cost of $100,000 for consultation and concept plans, after which the redevelopment work will begin. It is anticipated that the park's final redevelopment cost will be $2-3 million.

Mayor Michael Laws:

“When Kowhai Park was built in the 1960’s, it was the best children’s playground in the country. People came from all around New Zealand to enjoy the then spectacular attractions. Kowhai Park wasn’t intended to sit still without continual development and maintenance.

“I want Kowhai Park to be restored to that previous glory - a family-oriented, fun-filled recreational park that pleases locals and delights families. A playground for children of all ages.”
