Notes from Referendum Working Party held 7 November 2005 at 4.00pm

Present: Mayor Michael Laws, Crs Randhir Dahya, Murray Hughes, Dot McKinnon, Don McGregor and Sue Westwood, Ian McGowan, Kevin Ross, Stuart Hylton, Helen Lawrence, Noeline Moosman, Jay Paterson and Greg Tichbon. Minutes: Helen Couper

Noeline Moosman tabled draft voting papers.

The following points were raised:

  • Informal and blank wording on barcode boxes on voting forms to be deleted.
  • Delete ‘Ward’ from Wanganui Rural Ward Community Board.
  • Will be separate voting papers sent to rural and urban wards.

Spelling of Wanganui

  • Comma after ‘h’

Water softening

  • I vote for the Council to investigate the softening of Wanganui’s water supply.
  • I vote against the Council investigating the softening of Wanganui’s water supply.

Water fluoridation heading – correct spelling

Size of Council

  • I vote for the number of the Wanganui District councillors to be reduced.
  • I vote against the number of the Wanganui District councillors being reduced.

Abolition of urban and rural wards

  • I vote for rural and urban wards being abolished, in favour of one district wide ward.
  • I vote against rural and urban wards being abolished, in favour of one district wide ward
  • List of candidates to be in alphabetical order.

  • Council’s crest, in colour, to be on front page .
  • Read Referendum ’06 – Summary of Options, to be on back page.
  • Voting instructions on front page with ‘please read summary document on back page of this document’.
  • Jay waiting for content for website.
  • Jay tabled copy of front page of website.
  • Suggested should have people on it – Jay to liaise with Kevin re photos taken, also images in ‘blue book’.
  • Need clear guidelines on what constitutes an informal vote.
  • Not everyone will answer all questions.

Helen Lawrence tabled the proposed Referendum ’06 publicity/information along with key facts on fluoridation, showing substantiated evidence received.

  • Need to be speak with Dianna Kirton, Hawkes Bay DHB re statistics.
  • Need to be consistent and balance ‘for’ and ‘against’. Patrick O’Connor and Nigel Brook to be asked to verify information.
  • Document needs to have neutral headings.
  • Helen Lawrence noted alterations required for the Referendum publicity/information.
  • To liaise with Ian McGowan and Julian Reweti re water softening.
  • Water fluoridation too long but a complex issue. Mayor Laws asked members to look at this and email their suggestions and concerns individually to Helen Lawrence in the next few days. She will send a draft back to members by the end of this week. Comments back to her and these will be taken into consideration for the final document which to be tabled at the next Referendum ’06 Working Party meeting.

Next meeting – 3.00pm on Monday, 21 November 2005, in Committee Room 2.
