Water softening
Water softening
Most of Wanganui has hard water. You will be asked to vote for or against the Wanganui
District Council investigating the softening of Wanganui's water supply.
What is hard water?
Water hardness refers to the amount of lime present in water that can build up when heated (e.g. on a hotwater jug
element).
Hard water benefits
- Your health can benefit from the calcium content (although at a very low level)
- Prolongs the life of water pipes
Soft water benefits
- Replace hot water cylinder or jug element less often
- Use less detergent/s
- Use less power due to a more efficient hot water cylinder
Options and costs
A number of options exist for softening Wanganui's water. They range from integrating existing water supplies with soft
water from new bores through to the deluxe version of building a specialised water treatment plant.
The cost of investigating these options is estimated at $30,000. The council would then come back to you with details on
both options and estimated costs.
A specialised plant could be built within two years. Integrating soft water from new bores would occur gradually over
several years until complete coverage of Wanganui is achieved. This option has the added advantage of providing a more
reliable, long-term water supply.
