Referendum ’07 is your opportunity to have a real influence on some major issues facing our community. The Wanganui District Council has resolved to seek your input by way of referendum.

The issues for Referendum ’07 are outlined below. In most cases, the Council has stated its policy view and seeks a yes/no response from the community about whether to proceed. We have outlined advantages and disadvantages for each issue and, where appropriate, the associated costs.

One person, one vote
All Wanganui ratepayers and residents who are on the electoral roll can vote in the referendum. Voting papers for the referendum will be delivered to your letterbox from 22 March 2007. Each issue requires a simple vote YES or NO. You can then return your voting paper to us in the envelope provided. If you spoil your voting paper and need a replacement, contact Customer Services on 349 0001, or email wdc@wanganui.govt.nz. Please note that photocopies will not be accepted.

Voting closes at 12 noon on Saturday, 14 April 2007

The referendum results from 2005 and 2006 were not legally binding on the Council but have guided the Council’s actions during the past two years. This year’s referendum will have a significant effect on the District Council’s 2007/08 annual plan.
