The aim is to build upon our existing and iconic playground, and create the best play facility in New Zealand. This will be done by creating separate ‘worlds’ highlighting play facilities for kids of different ages – from toddlers to teenagers.
The redevelopment will provide for a new family picnic, barbecue and refreshment area, a café, upgraded toilet facilities, an extended Tot Town railway, an undercover and all-weather toddlers’ area plus enhanced adventure areas and a first-class BMX track.
Economic and social benefits
Creating the best kids’ playground in NZ will attract visitors from outside Wanganui 365 days of the year – creating a significant flow-on effect for the local economy
It supports the council’s family-friendly vision
It rebrands Kowhai Park as an iconic and fun feature of our city
It also has the potential to attract new families to Wanganui – the key to our region’s long-term health and survival
It will enhance the family experience and offer parents and grandparents a free, fun and safe outing for their children and grandchildren
Horizons Regional Council has agreed to design any flood protection around the redevelopment of Kowhai Park.
