A unitary authority for Wanganui? (click for more information)
Would Wanganui benefit from creating a single body to manage all the local authority services in its own district?
Taking on this responsibility would involve establishing a unitary authority that covers the Wanganui district and replaces Horizons Regional Council. There could be gains in efficiency and we may do a better job than Horizons at carrying out regional council functions for our people in our area. Local people making local decisions with local funding is driving council's interest in this issue.
How many gaming "pokie" machines should there be in Wanganui? (click for more information)
The Gambling Act 2003 requires the Wanganui District Council to adopt a policy on Class 4 venues (Gambling Venue Policy) for its district. Gaming machines, which are often called 'pokie' machines, in pubs and clubs (i.e. not in a casino) represent 'Class 4' gambling, which the Gambling Act 2003 classifies as high-risk, high-turnover gambling.
The council wants to know whether the community thinks its current Gambling Venue Policy should be changed.
